SureFire CPR Awards Medical Scholarship to Chapman University Student

SureFire CPR is proud to announce that Stephanie Swan, a master’s student at Chapman University, is the recipient of this year’s SureFire CPR Scholarship. With the recognition, Stephanie receives a $1,000 prize to use toward the cost of pursuing her Masters of Science degree in athletic training.

Stephanie learned how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid at the age of 12, and since that time, has maintained her certification. She was introduced to athletic training in high school, and her collegiate career has helped her take the initial steps to build a professional career in athletic training. Stephanie completed her undergraduate studies in kinesiology in three years and is finishing her master’s program in athletic training in two years. She also has established lofty career goals.

Stephanie graduates in May and is targeting a career in a collegiate or community college setting where she can make a difference in the lives of student athletes. She plans to relocate to Seattle following graduation and search for an athletic training position at a college or community college in the Emerald City. Although Stephanie has spent her life in California, she is ready to try something new in Seattle. Stephanie may look to get her PhD so she can go into teaching in the future as well.

For Stephanie, balance is key. Stephanie says she often gets caught up in trying to help everyone else. However, she has learned that taking care of herself is critical to build a successful career as an athletic trainer. Because if Stephanie takes care of herself, she believes she will be able to give the best care to student athletes at all times.

Stephanie continues to promote CPR and first aid awareness. She has been practicing CPR and been able to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) for the last 10 years. As such, Stephanie has the confidence and know-how to deliver critical support to those in need.

Going forward, Stephanie wants raise awareness about the importance of learning CPR and the use of AEDs. She wants to research sudden cardiac arrest and it’s causes and potential preventative measures. In addition, she wants to research pre-participation evaluations for student-athletes and the different health exams required.
