First Aid for Hair Salons (Part 3 – Bloodborne Pathogens)

Bloodborne Pathogen TrainingWhat is one of the most common overlooked aspects of first aid in salons? Two words: Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP).

What exactly are bloodborne pathogens? They are viruses or diseases that can be transmitted through blood or other bodily fluids that can cause diseases in people.

The three most common bloodborne pathogens are:

Hepatitus B

Hepaititus C

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)

Hepatitus B is the only of the three that has a vaccination available and the other 2 are currently incurable.  How can you protect yourself best at the salon from BBP?  Here are the top 3 ways:

Whenever handling any infectious material make sure that you protect yourself by wearing gloves and other protective gear (safety glasses, gown, etc.).

Sterilize properly all scissors, razors, and other cutting tools that could have been in contact with any infectious material.

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water after removing gloves from a cleanup.

It is equally important to have a well stocked first aid kit in the salon and for your staff to be trained how to use the items in the kit.  Bloodborne pathogen training is required annually by OSHA for businesses that have the potential to come in contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials.  CPR classes are also recommended for businesses and are usually available onsite through many safety companies.  Some are able to bundle the CPR Class, First Aid Certification, and Bloodborne Pathogen Training into one session.

Follow the steps above to help keep your salon safe!

Zack-Zarrilli
I spent 15 years as a firefighter and paramedic...

And too often I would arrive on the scene of someone unconscious, surrounded by a circle of people feeling helpless. Sometimes those people would even have CPR training but lacked the confidence and experience to act.

That’s why I started SureFire CPR. Our classes are practical and engaging – teaching you the crucial skills you need to know what to do and feel empowered to take action.
