CPR and first aid training is a combo course that teaches skills from two essential life-saving disciplines: CPR and basic first aid. Basic first aid covers first-response treatments for a number of issues, including muscle and bone injuries, seizures, trauma, allergic reactions, and more. Short for cardiopulmonary resuscitation, CPR is a method that combines chest compressions with mouth-to-mouth ventilation to manually preserve blood circulation and brain function. CPR certification courses will also cover use of an AED, discussed in the next question below.
An AED (or Automatic External Defibrillator) is an electronic device designed to restore a normal heartbeat in the event of sudden cardiac arrest. When placed on the chest and activated, an AED sends an electric shock to the heart to “reset” it and restore normal pumping.
To get an AED certification, you must enroll in and complete a CPR certification course with AED training. This course is usually accredited with either the American Red Cross, American Health and Safety Institute, or the American Heart Association.
