What is ACLS?

Advanced cardiac life support, or ACLS, training teaches skills for treating patients experiencing conditions that go beyond the need for basic life support. It is typically used by healthcare professionals who work in facilities where cardiac-related emergencies are most likely to occur. The main goal of ACLS is to keep the patient alive and improve the outcome by keeping neurological function intact during stroke, heart attack, sudden cardiac arrest and other cardiovascular emergencies.

What Is ACLS Certification?

Achieving ACLS certification requires individuals to be trained to the standard approved by the American Heart Association. ACLS certification signifies that the individual:

  • Understands basic life support
  • Can recognize and manage cardiac arrest and other respiratory arrest scenarios
  • Has the ability to lead and support a resuscitation team
  • Has demonstrated airway management skills
  • Understands the pharmacology of ACLS
Why Take an ACLS Certification Class?

ACLS is essential for many medical professionals because it significantly improves their chances of saving a patient’s life in respiratory distress situations. It teaches a wide range of technical knowledge and skills – including how to optimize resuscitation efforts – and can mean the difference between life and death during serious medical emergencies.

Who Should Take an ACLS Course?

ACLS classes are designed for medical professionals who already possess a broad range of technical knowledge, including basic anatomy, physiology and pharmacology, and

how to read electrocardiograms and administer medications. Candidates should also be qualified to intubate or administer intravenous drugs to a patient.

Recommended for medical professionals who may have to respond to a cardiac emergency, candidates for ACLS certification include doctors, registered nurses and paramedics.
