Keeping your dental team’s BLS training current takes planning, especially when patient appointments fill the calendar. Group AHA BLS certification for dental offices lets you buy seats once, assign the seats to your staff and track everyone’s completion while keeping your practice covered.
At SureFire CPR, an American Heart Association Training Site, every employee earns an American Heart Association BLS Provider Course Completion eCard after successfully completing the course requirements, and each one trains on a schedule that fits your office.
Why Dental Teams Need BLS Training
A patient who becomes unresponsive, stops breathing normally or begins choking needs a prompt, coordinated response. Basic Life Support (BLS) training builds the skills your team may need in those moments.
The AHA BLS Provider course covers skills such as:
- CPR for adults, children and infants.
- Automated external defibrillator (AED) use.
- Response to choking.
- Breathing support.
- Two-rescuer CPR and teamwork.
With SureFire CPR, your team doesn’t need to be in the same building or train at the same time. You build an online group, and each employee completes their training on their own time and at their own pace. Your practice should also have an emergency response plan, so everyone knows who calls emergency services, who retrieves equipment and who guides responders. BLS supports that plan, and your office may still need procedures for other medical emergencies.
Who on the Dental Team Should Be Certified?
Start with each employee’s responsibilities and any professional requirements that apply to them. California requirements vary by role, and some dental assistants have specific BLS obligations, so don’t assume one rule fits everyone.
Dentists and Clinical Staff
Include dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants in your review. Check each person’s current eCard, expiration date and any licensing or employer requirements.
Front-Office and Administrative Staff
Receptionists, office managers and other administrative employees are often nearby when a patient or visitor needs help. Many practices include them as a matter of policy. That is a practice decision, not a legal requirement, so treat it as one.
How Group BLS Training Works With SureFire CPR
Group enrollment gives your office one shared completion plan while each employee trains individually. Our group option combines online coursework with an in-person skills check at the SureFire CPR location of their choice.
- Choose your team and set a deadline
Pick the employees who need training and set an internal completion date. Assign one person to manage the group and assign the seats.
- Buy your group seats
Group pricing starts at 6 seats of any course. Each seat comes with its own booking code, and codes never expire. If you need to train more than 25 people per course, our group sales team can set up special pricing and invoicing.
- Assign the seats to your employees
Once you purchase the number of codes you need, you can bulk upload your employees’ emails or add them one by one to our database. They will automatically get invitations to their new certification.
- Employees complete the online coursework
Each employee finishes the online part on their own time. Separate study windows make it easier to keep patient coverage during the week. The online coursework doesn’t replace the hands-on skills session.
- Employees book their Skills Lab visit
Staff choose a location, date and time. Our locations are open 24/7, so employees can come before opening, after closing or on a day off. The skills check is hands-on, with an interactive manikin.
- Track completion and renewal
This is done automatically through our system. Each employee’s completion and renewal dates are tracked for you, so there’s nothing to collect or write down.
How to Schedule Training With Minimal Office Disruption
You can set one completion deadline for the whole team and still stagger the appointments. Build the plan around patient coverage and leave room to reschedule.
Audit expiration dates first
Make a roster with each employee’s role, current eCard expiration date and training status. Spot anyone whose card expires sooner than the rest of the team’s.
Set your internal deadline before the earliest expiration, so a missed appointment doesn’t become a staffing problem.
Stagger staff who cover the same duties
Avoid sending everyone with the same clinical responsibilities at once. Keep enough qualified staff in the office for the appointments on your calendar.
Plan coursework and skills visits separately
Track both parts. An employee who finishes the online course still needs the hands-on session. Ask staff to book their Skills Lab visit early and finish the online part before they go.
Track everything in one place
Enrollment, online completion, skills visit, eCard and expiration date are tracked automatically in our system. One coordinator can follow up on unfinished steps without sending repeated office-wide reminders.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every dental office employee need BLS training?
It depends on the employee’s role and the professional or employment rules that apply. Review dentists, hygienists and assistants individually. Your practice may also choose to include administrative staff to improve emergency readiness.
How often does an AHA BLS eCard need to be renewed?
The AHA BLS Provider Course Completion eCard is valid for two years.
Can our team complete AHA BLS entirely online?
No. Online coursework is only part of the process. Each employee also completes a hands-on skills session to finish the course and earn the eCard.
Can we train the whole team without closing the office?
Staggering online coursework and Skills Lab visits can help you keep patient coverage. Because employees book their own appointments, and our locations are open 24/7, you can schedule around your calendar. Review your staffing before you set the deadline.
Does group enrollment mean everyone trains together?
No. Each employee completes the coursework and books their skills visit on their own schedule. At the moment, we do not offer in-person or in-office training. All of our training is done through the American Heart Association’s newest system, which uses an interactive manikin, at the SureFire CPR location that’s most convenient for each employee.
Plan Your Dental Team’s BLS Training
Start with your staff roster and expiration dates, then choose a deadline that gives everyone time to finish both parts of the course.
