What is an ECG? Why do you need to know how to read one?

An ECG (or EKG) is one of the most valuable tools in the heart health field today. Using special electrode patches attached the skin of the chest, arms, and legs, ECGs obtain a visual readout of heart activity created by electrical impulses within the heart.

ECG tests and readouts can be used to check for irregular heart rhythms, ischemia (poor blood flow to the heart), heart attacks, thickened heart muscles, and significant electrolyte abnormalities (like low or high calcium or high potassium). As each of these issues can display itself differently on an ECG, knowing what to look for is instrumental in correctly identifying and diagnosing any heart issues you encounter.
